*THE CHARACTER*
Fandom: Amatsuki
Character Name: Bonten
Background/History Link: ...You really don't want the wiki. It's made of fail and gives a sentence on Bonten.

The series itself is named after the Amatsuki: the four holy beings, of which Bonten is one. These Amatsuki can separate their body and soul, and are considered to be the closest things to gods in this world. Teiten, the god who created everything has the power of the unwritten page: that is, he can create his own fate, as well as change the course of everyone else's lives. Bonten and the other two Amatsuki do not have this power, though they have the ability to read fate, and for this reason, Bonten has become interested in the human called Tokidoki, who also has the power of the unwritten page.

As an Amatsuki, Bonten appears to be the leader of the demons. Though once a demon named Byakuroku was in power, Byakuroku had marked Bonten (Hiwa, as he called him back then) as his successor ever since Bonten was young. Now that Byakuroku is dead and gone, it is clear that Bonten has finally taken over.

It has been revealed in recent chapters that Bonten and Ginshu (the fake holy princess) were once friendly. Bonten, as a weaker, young demon was able to pass through the barrier around the holy shrine, and was injured deeply by a more powerful demon who used him as bait to get to the Holy Princess. Bonten was saved by Ginshu, though to this day, his wings seem to be useless. After Ginshu was cursed by Byakuroku, however, their meetings came to a stop, and they grew to be enemies. Now Ginshu wants to destroy the world; Bonten wants to save it.

Throughout the series, Bonten's main goal has been to try and sway Toki over to his side: to "protect the Amatsuki and become its master." At first he tricked Toki, bringing him into another dimension in order to speak to him. Then, he "fixed" Toki's injured eye, allowing him to see certain events that he'd never know otherwise. This power comes into use particularly during the Imayou arc. He protects Toki because he needs him, and often shows up in places he shouldn't in order to talk to him.

His canon powers that have been shown so far include making protective charms, creating illusions, possessing people for short periods of time, separating his body and soul, and interpreting heaven's net.

Point in Canon: After the Imayou arc.
Personality: Bonten is calm, mysterious, and nonchalant, with an ability to look at facts objectively without letting his emotions get the better of him. He has an elegant, sophisitcated way of speaking, though he can act rashly, and certainly did that quite often in his youth. He is wise, insightful and something near all-knowing. Though he seems to be from the Edo time period, as that's where the series takes place, he asks Toki whether robots or humans are superior. Clearly, he knows at least parts of the future.

But his wisdom is not merely limited to his visions of the future, and of the world around him. It also shows in his insight with regards to emotions, life, and people in general. While many others in his position might have killed a subordinate who got out of hand, he tells Tsuyukusa that "a difference of opinion can be forgiven and forgotten." Thus, he can also be compassionate and forgiving as well.

In the face of a threat, Bonten is relaxed and unwilling to panic. He typically has a strategy worked out before he acts, and never seems to be in a rush. He is patient, willing to let things work out as they will.

He has a dull, dry, sarcastic sense of humour, and seems to take a condescending tone whenever talking to humans. He does have contacts within the human world, including Susutake (an ex-criminal), but considers them to be a little slow or stupid -- and Bonten detests stupidity and ignorance. He calls Heihachi a "plain little dirt farmer," which seems to be his overall opinion of most human beings. He is arrogant, selfish, egotistical, manipulative -- and can even be a little childish, such as when he's woken up by Utsubushi. He often turns to violence in those situations, and it is clear that Tsuyukusa and Utsubushi think these bouts of childish behaviour are temper tantrums. He idolises napoleon, perhaps for his intelligence, leadership, and ruthessness, and in extra scenes in the manga, he's shown to be extremely narcissistic.

But despite these more harmless faults, Bonten has been shown to be extremely ruthless. He says that anyone who becomes his enemy will suffer, and warns Toki that he'll "reach out to anyone, but I crush fools in the palm of my hand." He can be terrifying when angry, and his threats are anything but idle ones.

Preferred Army: Ex Favila; if a leadership position is open, Bonten would like it. :3
Non-Military Job: N/A

*SAMPLES*
First-person Sample:

...A war zone.

Perhaps the machines did outperform their operators -- or perhaps you dirt farmers have become just what we've always feared you'd be.

And you call us the monsters.

Third-person Sample:

Bonten watches from the shadows; Toki does not know he's there. He's a fairly unobservant human, and Bonten takes great pleasure in this. He watches as Toki swallows, eyes huge in his head, and he steps away from the comatose body of his first friend in this godforsaken world in shock. "Wha--?"

Bonten knows what he's thinking: that Toki left Shinonome safe; left him in the care of the princess, who seems so kind and wonderful. And now Kuchiha is wounded, Shinonome put under this spell of sleep. Toki is furious (oh, Bonten knows he is), but bemused and stunned all at the same time.

He has been this way for a while.

A voice comes from directly behind him, calm but slightly exasperated. "Don't look so surprised." It is Bonten, emerging from the shadows into the light, that perpetually monotonous expression on his supernaturally beautiful face; he's been there for a while, watching, waiting, after all. "I did warn you about her, after all."

Toki's hands are shaking, badly. "But--"

"Oh, they're just prejudiced." Bonten's lips curve upwards, but it is a bitter arch, and his lips thin as they move. Prejudiced, perhaps, because of Byakuroku's curse upon her. But it is a personal vendetta Ginshu wields as a weapon against the world and its powers, and Bonten cannot forgive that. "But I did try to tell you she wasn't trustworthy. That you had to choose between us and them -- and that the entity of 'us' was entirely and utterly opposed to the entity that is 'them.'"

His wings flutter, spreading and stretching before they are retracted into his shoulder-blades. They are worthless, these wings. He pushes the unpleasant memories back into the recesses of his brain. It can cause a sense of sympathy for the false princess, and Bonten cannot afford such sentiments. No matter what Ginshu has been in the past -- a saviour, a fair-weather friend -- she is nothing but a foe now.

Toki eyes his sleeping friend in dismay. "So this is how it has to be?" He seems sad, and Bonten just watches his every movement with disinterested eyes. This is how it has to be, his mind echoes. The lines of his face, the set of his body -- they hold no empathy. There's a choice that must be made. This is how it has to be.

"You can't walk that thin line of pleasing everybody, you know." Bonten is right, of course, as he typically is. Toki's fists clench around the blankets that cover Shinome's body. "It never works out -- staying neutral, that is. Remaining in a state of ambivalence."

Bonten's bare feet do not make a sound as he makes his way towards the figure sleeping on the futon. He tilts his head, as though listening to something that does not exist. He's not crazy: Bonten knows what he's doing. Toki, with an implicit and naive sense of trust, realises this and so he awaits the demon's assessment of the situation with relative impatience.

Finally Bonten straightens up, blond hair cascading into his vision, obscuring his view of Toki and Toki's view of him. "Well," he says casually. "It should be fairly easy to undo -- for me, of course."

"Please, do it." Toki says, eying him earnestly. "Please." His tone has a plaintive edge to it; he is more than concerned, more than eager, more than hopeful.

But Bonten just lifts his shoulders in what looks like a regal, but self-deprecating shrug. "You owe me something." Indeed, he does.

"I am not so altruistic as to help my enemies," he remembers telling him days (or has it been weeks? His sense of time is warped and broken; he has no use for time) before. Toki should remember this much, even for a fool of a human.

Toki blinks once then twice then three times. Bonten continues to speak before Toki gets a chance to reply.

"You, the one with the power of the Unwritten Page," Bonten says, like he's said it dozens of times before. "You must decide, and you must decide now. I've given you enough time." His wings unfurl again; he is making his point clear. It's a warning. Toki does not know his wings are broken, that he cannot fly. Toki only knows that Bonten has unfathomable powers -- and does not understand that Toki's own powers are greater than Bonten's own. Foolish, foolish human. "Decide now, once and for all. You cannot rescind your decision once you speak it -- so speak it well."

Toki hesitates.

"You cannot have both the Princess and I on your side," says Bonten. His voice is suddenly harsh, eyes narrowing into savage, anticipatory slits. Threatening. But Ginshu has done her damage, lost him forever. "Choose."

And if Toki has a drop of intelligence in his body, he will.

...Hm.

This isn't Edo.

...Well, I've always wanted to visit the future, I suppose.
